Penfield crash kills two Elyria teens in early morning collision
Two Elyria teenage brothers, John Smitley 13 and George Smitley Jr. 15, died when their station wagon was struck broadside by a tractor trailer at Rt 301 and Rt 18 in Penfield Township. Their father suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized. The accident marked the 13th traffic fatality at the intersection since 1967. The family was en route to a church campground near Newark to aid in constructing a tabernacle for their Oneness Pentecostal Church. The collision occurred as the southbound wagon pulled into the path of the eastbound rig shortly after 6 am. Residents described the crash and noted stopping signals and oversized stop signs at the intersection. The second fatality was reported on Columbia West River Road in Columbia Township.

Rapids crash probe begins in Cleveland
Nine people were admitted in fair or satisfactory condition as investigators moved to probe a head on collision in Cleveland.
