Ohio Senate approves redistricting bill after 1980 census

Ohio's Democratic Senators passed a redistricting bill by 20 to 12 to redraw the state's 23 congressional districts including the 13th and 17th. Major changes affect Columbus Cincinnati and Dayton areas with Stark Warren Clark split across districts while VanMeter of Ashland denounces the plan as crammed down the public's throat three years before the next census.

Storm delivers brief cool spell and power outages

A ten minute storm swept Lorain County around 5 p.m. dropping temperatures from 93 to 79 degrees and leaving over 20,000 homes without power. Widespread outages lasted 15 minutes to seven hours, with Elyria’s East Broad Street area hit hardest after a lightning strike on a major power station. Forecasts call for low 80s with upper 60s tonight and possible thunder showers tomorrow.

Four miners killed in Virginia mine blast recovered

In Virginia, four miners died when a powerful explosion rocked a southwestern coal mine. Bodies were recovered at 2 am after rescue teams faced smoke dust and gas. Fifteen hundred feet away, fourteen others escaped. Federal investigators opened the case.

Trains Collide Head On in Cleveland Crash Injuring Dozens

Two rapid transit trains on the same track collided on Cleveland's east side near E 92nd Street and Holton Avenue. As many as 25 to 30 people were injured with passengers trapped in wreckage. A fire truck aided rescue crews lifting victims from a gully while ambulances and police rushed to the scene. Authorities could not yet explain why the trains were on the same track.

Gallatin denied shock parole in Ohio theft case

Kenneth Gallatin, a former Oberlin teacher, was denied shock parole by the Ohio Board of Parole after a 2 to 5 year sentence for his role in Anthony Marsico's 1974 auto tag fund theft. He may seek regular parole in October and could be released after 13 months. A third suspect, Eddie Goodwin, faces regular parole consideration soon.

Unemployment up while wholesale prices fall in June

Unemployment rose to 7.1 percent in June as wholesale prices dropped 0.6 percent led by a 6.3 percent fall in farm products, signaling inflation cooling for shoppers. Despite wage trends, joblessness edged higher from May, despite hopes for GDP relief. The Cleveland Indians recalled Charlie Spikes from Toledo and moved Johnny Grubb to the 15 day disabled list. Spikes, back for tonight’s game vs Toronto, had hit .291 with seven homers since April 23 assignment.

Steeple Theft Baffles Lakewood Church in Denver Suburb

Denver AP reports a 15 foot 80 pound church steeple was stolen from a parking lot where it waited to be moved to a new church this weekend. Police took the report as the pastor reacts with disbelief. In Tucson a thief demanded 15 buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken for a portrait of Colonel Harland Sanders.

Reckless theft spree ends in hearse crash at cemetery

In Ann Arbor Michigan Ray Higgenbottom, 19, attempted to steal a hearse from Mochhig Funeral Home, seized a funeral flag, and drove the hearse through a wooden wall before police halted pursuit. The vehicle crashed into an embankment at Fairview Cemetery injuring another driver. He faces arraignment on multiple charges.
