Remarkable East Bridge Street span in Elyria 1886

A hundred years ago Elyria boasted the East Bridge Street bridge over the Black River with a 150 foot single span and 23 foot rise making it one of the world’s flattest and ninth longest. The dressed sandstone arch rested on native rock abutments under John Weller, praised as a conscientious contractor. The river powered mills and electricity, leaving old dams and mills like East Falls and the Old Red Mill in memory, while local lore notes frequent bridge crossings as fortune. Schedules at the Elyria Opera House featured Riley, Ny, and a magician promising cake in a hat.
