Tolentino Seizes Oath As Clash Rages In Manila Hotel

Arturo Tolentino was sworn in amid Marcos loyalists at the Manila hotel and later left via a fire escape for a four hour meeting with a government representative. Soldiers remained inside and debated whether to leave, while Mrs. Aquino threatened sedition charges and urged compliance with government control.

Supreme Court strikes down key Gramm-Rudman provision

The Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, ruled that automatic deficit reductions under the Gramm-Rudman Act violate separation of powers by granting a congressional comptroller general an executive function. The ruling leaves Congress the option to approve deficit cuts if the automatic mechanism is invalidated. The decision ends the court's 1985-86 term with significant implications for fiscal policy.

Sword wielder kills on Staten Island ferry

An emotionally disturbed man armed with a sword killed a woman and wounded nine other passengers aboard the Staten Island ferry Samuel L Newhouse from Manhattan to Staten Island. A retired officer on board fired but did not hit anyone. One victim suffered cardiac arrest. several were treated at Bayley Seton Hospital with more expected. The ferry is a common commuter and tourist ride past the Statue of Liberty.

Route 18 crash kills Columbia Station mom

A head on collision on Route 18 near the Medina County line killed Roberta Holliday 32 of Columbia Township and injured four others including her son Daniel 10 and three adults. Mrs Holliday was a nursing student and was not wearing a seatbelt. Police investigate no charges filed.
