U.S. crime rate drops in first quarter 1977

The FBI reports a 9 percent drop in nationwide crime in the first quarter of 1977, the largest quarterly decline in 19 years. Reductions occurred in five of seven major categories while rapes rose 5 percent and aggravated assaults 1 percent. Larceny led the declines, and the trend spanned cities suburbs and rural areas. The cold winter and heavy snow are cited as possible causes.

Cleveland crime mixed trends in first five months

FBI data show Cleveland had fewer homicides and rapes year over year but a near ten percent rise in overall violent crime. Robberies and assaults grew 14 percent, property crimes fell 6.8 percent, burglaries rose 12.6 percent, and the crime index slipped 9.6 percent while aggravated assaults stayed the same at 476.

Records topple as heat wave sticks around

A 94 degree day pushed power use to a record, triggering outages in Lorain County and western Cuyahoga County. About 1,000 Ohio Edison customers in Elyria plus all in North Ridgeville and Columbia Station lost power for 25 minutes late yesterday night. Bay Village Westlake area saw a 20 minute outage earlier in the afternoon. CEI and Ohio Edison officials cited record electricity use, while some outages might reflect timing after peak demand. Ford recalls Econolines over panel padding risk

Ford Motor Co and NHTSA recall about 295000 locally built Econoline vans and Club Wagons due to foam padding that could shatter in a crash injuring occupants.
