Mileage climbs slowly on Elyria fire department cars

Elyria residents notice the fire department’s large motors racing with sirens, but Chief W N Bates reports these cars rack little mileage. The oldest pumper from 1911 has 150 miles per year, while a 1914 ladder truck averages about 100 miles annually. Other units show low totals, including a 12 year 2,218 mile pumper and a 1920 hose car at 4,686 miles. The two smallest vehicles, a service truck and the chief’s coupe, have logged the most mileage.
