Monks Seek New Base at Canfield Motel
Holy men from the Syro Russian Orthodox Church arrive in Canfield Ohio led by Archbishop Timothy Kjera and Father Anthony seeking a monastery by converting the Colonial Motel Condotel. The move follows a questionable history including a Colorado seminary shutdown and accusations in Minnesota of luring Africans with false promises of religious education.

Ohio police expand use of immigration status checks
More Ohio law enforcement agencies join the Secure Communities program linking fingerprints to Homeland Security immigration records. Counties including Cuyahoga and Franklin began using it in January with Hamilton County to follow. Critics warn the system may incentivize arrests of immigrants over minor offenses to trigger deportation checks. Local officials defend it as preventing dangerous criminals from remaining at large.

Expert reviews Toledo elephant attack footage
International elephant expert Alan Roocroft says the Toledo Zoo incident appears to be a fluke and the elephant Louie did not intend to harm trainer Don Red Fox, who was injured. Video shows Louie in a crouch after the attack while munching scattered carrots. The zoo delays video release citing privacy rights and continues the investigation with Louie, his mother Renee, and Twiggy on exhibit.
