Supreme Court rules trials must be open to public

The Supreme Court, in a 7-1 decision, held criminal trials must be open to the press and public unless an overriding interest justifies closure. Chief Justice Burger said access is implicit in the First Amendment, and trials should be open absent compelling findings, with limited restrictions allowed for fairness or overcrowding. Justice Rehnquist dissented.

Extended toll-free link between Elyria and Lorain on hold

PUCO put on hold a proposal for extended telephone service between Elyria and Lorain exchanges. Paperwork filed March 7 by Robert Wickens. Elyria Telephone Co. and Lorain Telephone Co. had 30 days to respond, then Wickens 60 days to answer. decision now pending with no ETA. Lorain Telephone filed an exception, citing potential losses of over 1 million in local calls and 281000 in foreign-exchange revenues, and questioned the canvassing method to gauge resident support.
