Sun Belt heat wave drives death toll past fifty

The heat wave blamed on a huge high pressure system over north Texas has caused more than 50 deaths across Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas. By Monday night about 55 deaths were linked to 100 degree plus temperatures with elderly air conditioned residents most at risk. The searing heat strained infrastructure and shut down camps and shelters while crippling highways and poultry losses mounted across the region.

Jobless rate hits 14.9 percent in Lorain County

Unemployment in Lorain County rose to 14.9 percent in May, the highest since 1960, with 18 497 of 124 000 workers jobless as layoffs at Ford plants in Lorain and Avon Lake extend into August. Nearby counties face similar strain amid record heat and deaths from heat.

Abortion ruling draws favorable local reaction

Lawson's Bakery Sued Over Gender Pay Gap in Ohio

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a federal suit on behalf of 10 women at Lawson’s Bakery and Pastry Plant in Cuyahoga Falls alleging women were paid less than men for equal work. A temporary restraining order hearing was scheduled before Judge Ann Aldrich as the case investigates wage disparities of 32 to 47 cents per hour.
