Disputed Disaster Areas and Aid Plans Across States
Washington reports designate eight Kansas and Nevada counties as disaster areas eligible for emergency feed programs. Plans suspend drought designations for 19 New Mexico counties by March 15, removing them from eligibility. Idaho counties gain eligibility for emergency crop loans through December 31. Also noted are cautions on using softened household water for indoor plants and advice to harvest rainwater for plant care.

Part-Time Farmer Increase Shown In Income Figures
Ohio State ag economist H R Moore reports one third of farm families rely on non farm work for over half their income. Two thirds of Summit County farmers work 100 days or more away from home yearly, with variation by county. He cites machinery adoption and demand for modern goods pushing part time farming as many families seek cash off the farm. The Sportsmen's Show will showcase boating and farming gear, reflecting rural work trends.

Same Combine For Wheat Corn, Engineer Predicts
Lincoln, Neb. agri cultural engineer L W Marlbut chairman of the University of Nebraska agricultural engineering department predicts farmers in the next decade will use the same all purpose combine for corn as for wheat. Experiments show the machine shells and cleans corn well, cutting off stalks and ejecting corn cobs to the ground. The university has used the machine on wheat and grass then adapted it to corn in about two hours. Interest in an all purpose combine grew with better grain drying methods though 27 percent moisture is too high for safe cribbing, requiring artificial drying.

Taper Production To Bolster Egg Poultry Prices
Washington reports the poultry and egg sectors are cutting output to lift prices. Laying flocks were culled faster last fall, egg production to rise only modestly for 2 3 months, and consumer egg availability should stay near last year’s level. Broiler prices rose after late 1953 declines, with output reduced since last autumn and turkeys sold at higher prices during holiday demand. Projections show continued reduced turkey and light-breed production through spring, while heavies stay near 1954 levels.
