Berlin reports Fort San Carlos at Maracaibo attacked on January 21 by German warships Panther and Vineta. Initial action saw heavy fire, a brief exchange, and difficulties with navigation, followed by continued bombardment as Venezuelan government forces reportedly hold San Carlos amid uncertain confirmations.
The charter for Georgia was granted by George II on June 9 1732, making it England’s popular new colony. Col James Oglethorpe founded the colony and, as first governor, earned Indian trust by negotiating a peace treaty with the Pamacraws led by chief Tomu-Chichi.

Chicago January 24. Mrs Stella Wright and two young women, staying as housekeepers for William Lewis at 4499 State Street, were killed yesterday by Lewis. He fled but surrendered after a struggle as officers moved to his home. On the way to the station he cut his throat with a razor. he survived briefly and confessed to the murder, promising letters explaining his motives. Cincinnati January 24.
