FCC OKs Bell rate hike to boost AT&T returns
The FCC voted 7 to 0 to allow AT&T to file rate increases that would lift the Bell System's return on investment from 8.75 to 9.5 percent, adding about 225 million dollars annually. The commission rejected a higher 10.5 to 11 percent request and said further proceedings are needed to judge remaining requests. AT&T called the ruling conditional but said it is pleased, while hinting possible appeals. A separate study urged restructuring long distance rate plans, potentially lowering residential rates while raising business and government charges.
