Bricker Opposes Bills To Empower New Levies By Cities
In Columbus on January 19 Governor Bricker signaled removal of the matching requirement from a $5,000,000 emergency relief measure is possible if city officials accept it in a permanent bill. He suggested enabling bills to help cities finance half the cost of a long range program but opposed bills to empower new levies. City leaders oppose matching funds given depleted operating budgets and WPA pledges. The administration may propose loosening general revenue funds to allow city matching while yearmarking existing tax sources. The bill moves through a House subcommittee and welfare committee before floor action next week as Senate adjourns.

Bricker blasts WPA dismissals over relief strain
Governor Bricker denounces WPA dismissals as arbitrary and uncaring, arguing the move worsens relief woes while old age and mothers pensions and dependent children aid struggle to handle demand. A Senate bill seeks to curb State Public Works Director Wahl power, aiming to appoint a state house superintendent and tighten control of maintenance staff. Bricker says discussions occurred but offers no full backing for the bill.
