La Grange residents approved five liquor measures in a special wet election with 252 votes. The village becomes open to the sale of intoxicating liquors and wine by the package for off premises use, with narrow margins on each proposal.
The Ohio Chamber of Commerce urged reforms to the Tax Commission and Highway Department including a three member Tax Commission board and a bipartisan highway panel with an indefinitely serving director. It recommends centralized relief, no new taxes, better sales tax collection, and auditing. It opposes earmarking funds and favors school foundation funding via long term refunds.
About 1300 Amherst voters will decide in a special February 21 referendum whether to build a municipal electric plant. The ordinance, backed by 500 petitioners, calls for the village to fund the $140,100 project with 45 percent from a PWA grant, per Mayor C. E. Cooper.
A New Guinea Airways Transport airliner crashed into the Katherine River killing three crew members and a passenger. Separately a military plane fell in fog near Rudesheim, killing three people.

The Senate Commerce committee backed Harry L. Hopkins for Secretary of Commerce and sent his nomination to the Senate floor for debate and a final vote. The vote was partisan with 13 Democrats for Hopkins and six Republicans against.
Elyria eyes a new Ohio National Guard armory after Adjutant General Emil Marx urged a $50,000 state appropriation. If funded, a 65-member company would be housed here, replacing the current 22 in a former garage on Third Street. Armory officials expect a site inspection soon and plan to push the project forward pending legislative action.

The crew of the British steamer Ulmus was rescued today after a fire broke out 60 miles east of Cape Tarifa on the southwestern coast of Spain. The steamer Waziristan took the men aboard. Both vessels are British.
Denver January 18 Former U S Senator Edward Prentiss Costigan 64 Democrat Colorado died at his home last night of a heart attack He was an early supporter of New Deal labor and relief measures.
Loyalist forces on the central Catalan front repelled repeated Insurgent assaults as Franco’s rebels pressed a northern advance toward Pons. Italian and Spanish divisions aided the central drive on Igualada while Loyalists defended Panadella and entrenched positions near Villespinosa and Vendrell. Fighting in southwestern Spain was reported stalled.
Washington January 18 Congress awaits a presidential message proposing reciprocal taxation of state municipal and federal salaries and securities in the future. President Roosevelt announced at a press conference that the tax message would be sent to Congress tomorrow and had sent a similar message to the last Congress.
Alfred Humphrey of Ashtabula, head of the enforcement division of the State Liquor Control Department, was dismissed today by Director Jacob B. Taylor. Taylor said the staff would be cut from 160 to 80 inspectors soon and a successor was not named.
Weirton Steel Co. will begin construction about Feb 1 on a $250,600 chemical metallurgical and research laboratory near the general office, announced President T. E. Millsop. The project aims to advance corporate research and development capabilities in Weirton, West Virginia.
Washington January 18 Representative Arthur Anderson Democrat Missouri introduced the first bill seeking full repeal of the Wagner Labor Relations Act. The measure would replace the act with a limited labor board empowered to hold hearings and file complaints in district courts, with elections required before union certification and bargaining charges.
County Treasurer Walter J Wright says about 30000 tax bills will be mailed by week’s end for the semiannual collection period closing around March 1. He notes roughly $200000 has already been collected and that bills are mailed only to residents who filed addresses. others must pay at the treasurer’s office or at authorized agencies now open in Oberlin Lorain County.
Representative William E. Ashbolt of Lorain County co sponsors two measures introduced in the Ohio House yesterday. One establishes a bureau of aid for the physically handicapped in the Welfare Department with Harter of Summit and Whetto of Lawrence as co sponsors. The second bill, with Ashbolt and Harter, promotes purchase by state institutions of goods made by the blind and encourages institutional employment of blind persons.
State Welfare Director Charles L Sherwood ordered an investigation into the escape of Howard Cecil Bowman a bank robber and brother of Neal Bowman from Ohio Penitentiary W F Amrine the corrections superintendent was ordered to assist Warden James C Woodard in the inquiry
Elyria Recreation Board sponsors will hold women gym classes at Ely School tonight. Matrons meet 7 to 8 30 p m and young women from 8 30 to 10 p m. Entrance is via the rear door of the school.
Maj. Gen. H. H. Arnold told the House Military Affairs committee that defense requires five new air bases in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, and two in the continental United States. He urged immediate action on the bases, 3,000 more planes, and personnel training, aiming for occupancy within two years as part of a broad defense bill.
Probate Judge H H Nye administrator of the Aid for Dependent Children program warned that 79 families may lose aid due to a 1939 appropriation cut. A 1:30 p.m. Monday board meeting will decide policy. County share is 50,000. total funding being reduced by about 2,000 dollars monthly. ADC now assists nearly 1,100 people, 950 of whom are children.
Paris report says the cabinet rejected a left wing demand to aid Spanish Loyalists. It reaffirmed a hands off non intervention policy while defending empire integrity. It offered possible talks with Italy on Addis Ababa railway and Djibouti port facilities. A confidence vote is set for Friday in the Chamber of Deputies.
Frank L. Kluckhohn of the New York Times says dispatches about Mexican political deals with Germany led to his expulsion from Mexico. He will keep reporting on U S politics but from the United States. The Mexican government reprimanded American reporters and ordered him out in 24 hours for knowing too much.
Royal Keesy of Attica Ohio, 64, was indicted by the Seneca county grand jury on three arson charges. The cases accuse him of setting fires on February 13 1915 at the Jacob Smith farm in Venice township and March 3 1932 at the Willis Stahl farm in Scipio township, plus burning 1500 dollars of property including six horses and six cows on the Sherman Tilton tenancy on the Smith farm.
Robert Thompson, 48, Oberlin resident and Perry Fay Company employee, died at Allen Memorial Hospital from chest injuries and brain concussion after his car was struck by a New York Central freight train at South Park street crossing. Survived by widow Ella and two children, Robert and Grace. Body to Sedgeman funeral home.
Columbus Ohio January 18 State Highway Director Robert Beightler says 1310 workers have been dismissed in eight days as part of the Republican administration’s economy drive. He reports 150 layoffs in Highway Division No 10 covering Athens Gallia Hocking Meigs Monroe Morgan Noble Vinton and Washington counties and says further cuts are planned. Beightler seeks to identify who ordered destruction of Highway Department records before the new administration and suspended personnel chief J Matthew Carr. He accuses Xenophon G Hassenplug of ordering records burned when he was chief of maintenance. Hassenplug received two weeks vacation without pay from the Public Works Department yesterday.
George H. Dean 72 of 441 Adams Street died this morning of a heart attack after entering his son's car in front of the courthouse to pay taxes. He was a clerk at Western Automatic Machine and Screw Co and had lived in Elyria 45 years. Survived by wife Grace and mother Louise Moyer. funeral arrangements at Taylor Funeral Home.
John R. Williams of Painesville was reappointed to the Kent State University Board of Trustees by Governor Bricker. His term runs until May 17, 1943. Williams serves as superintendent of Lake County Schools.
