German and British markets react as Adolf Hitler removes Hjalmar Schacht from the Reichsbank presidency and appoints Walther Funk as his successor. The move signals intensified Nazi control of the economy and prompts commentary on its global impact.

Light snow reported from the lake region and Ohio valley with fair weather elsewhere. High pressure over the Pacific Northwest to Atlantic states. weak low central over Canadian prairies extends southeast to middle Mississippi and Ohio valleys.
Mayor Joseph Petro called a 3:45 p.m. meeting Monday of the city park board and civic and fraternal representatives to discuss acquiring the 22 acre Lak eroud property now in foreclosure for park use. Elyria Savings and Trust Co. forecloses to satisfy a judgment for 26 590.
James Wise, foreman at General Industries, was elected president of the Elyria Foremen's Club as 150 foremen and executives from local plants met at the Y M C A. He succeeds Glen Brodrick of Troxel Manufacturing. New officers include L R Minch first vice president R G Rhodes second vice president and William Vinson third vice president. The group heard L D Sanford discuss the Ohio Unemployment Compensation Law from a foreman’s view. The General Industries Company sent the largest delegation with 41 attendees.
Lorain County Business Council set to discuss Governor Brickers proposed economic program at Antlers Hotel Lorain next Friday. The council will study legislative proposals and inform state legislators of the groups views on such proposals, favorable or unfavorable.
Oberlin resident and Lorain state highway engineer A. P. Lagron is listed among dismissed highway engineers in Ohio as part of a GOP economy move. State Highway Director Robert S. Beightler announced the action today.
Berlin dispatch reports negotiations with the International Refugee Commission for emigration of German Jews were discontinued following the removal of Dr. Hjalmar Schacht as Reichsbank president. The announcement stated the talks were halted as a result of the leadership change.
Four Lorain youths facing life imprisonment for burglary of an inhabited dwelling at night were placed on probation by Common Pleas Judge D A Cook. The four Lautner Pavlica Drogas and Rottari aged 23 to 20 had no prior record and pleaded guilty to grand larceny in a deal that dropped the burglary charge. Lautner received five years probation with a no alcohol condition. the others three years each. Restitution to Steve Pirigy is required.
A Burgos radio report says Franco’s plane was struck by anti-aircraft fire while over the Barcelona suburbs during a Catalan front survey. One rebel aircraft was shot down as the squadron scanned Insurgent and Loyalist positions.
Funeral services will be held Sunday for George J. Duswald 60 Harri son county Democratic chairman who died at his home in Scio last night after a heart attack.
Cleveland police say Peyton and Quenton Wilson confessed to seven crimes, with five in Cleveland and others in New Orleans and Nashville. They posed as sons of a Chicago meat-packing family and gossiped with wealthy aviation circles, claiming ties to movie stars and rare social prestige.
Elyria physicians met with Mayor Joseph Q. Petro and Service Director I. D. Faxon to set a city payment schedule for doctors treating indigents. Fees will be about one third lower than standard charges, with further reductions for emergencies and maternity cases. Only authorized services will be paid under the plan.
E H Snellenberger of Winckles Street and Fred M Dean of Fairlawn Avenue went on a hunting trip and returned with a red fox after a half mile chase by their dog. Snellenberger shot the fox with a shotgun and plans to make a fur neckpiece from the pelt.
In New Orleans on January 20 a 15 year old boy, Sidney Badeaux, shot and killed his father after pleading him to stop beating his mother. The event occurred today and is under police investigation.

Washington reports vigorous opposition from state governments to President Roosevelt s plan to tax income from federal, state, and municipal bonds. The 42 state attorneys general conference vows to oppose the measure at Senate hearings, arguing it raises borrowing costs and violates tax immunity. Rep. Somers of New Jersey warns higher bond taxes may force real estate tax hikes to cover interest.
Reports from the Ohio Unemployment Compensation office at 322 Broad Street indicate that while 892 compensation applications were filed in the first 15 business days and an average of 60 daily, some claimants have already been called back to work. Acting manager Sumner W. Day notes claimants report earnings two weeks after filing, and first benefit payments await three weeks of unemployment and any earnings.
London reports Germany sent a note confirming the Nazi government's plan to equal Britain's navy in submarines and to construct five 10 000 ton cruisers armed with 8 inch guns. Berlin discussions also touched revoking rights to increase submarine and cruiser tonnage under the 1935 and 1936 naval treaties.
Mrs. Olga Rice, 26, of 418 West avenue, was taken to Elyria Memorial hospital at 4 15 pm yesterday after a traffic crash at West avenue and Sixth street. Her car was struck by a truck driven by John Basilone of Lorain. A second collision at Broad street and Washington avenue involved a car driven by Harry Tedrow of Elyria and an Elyria Lumber Co. truck driven by Frank Todgham.

Lorain County will pay 157189 in bond and interest charges this year, excluding relief bonds, financed from special taxes for relief. Treasurer Walter J. Included is 41143 interest on the 1.58 million bridge issue. first bonds retire next year.
William J. Krueck of South Amherst was named by Senator Vic Donahey to the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis. A graduate of South Amherst High School, he is in his second Oberlin College year majoring in chemistry and has completed a summer course at Cochlin and Bryant Preparatory School. He will be 20 in May. His father, a former navy man, is a rural mail carrier. William is the second eldest of eight children.
Ohio liquor director Jacob B. Taylor warned distillers against attempting to influence state stores. He threatened a blacklist for any who yield to political pressure or fix sales, and urged salesmen to avoid state stores and refrain from soliciting favors or gifts.
In Wooster Ohio Fred Yuncker recalled his brother in law Harry Taylor died last September in Columbus. He found two shoes left in his car at a junk yard and the dealer Meyer Shapiro retrieved $76 in bills from one shoe. The money is being returned to the widow.
Tokyo reports that army officials completed supplementary budget estimates totaling 1.3625 billion dollars for submission to the diet. The plan envisions joint operations against China and the Soviet Union, a two front budget reflecting alleged readiness for simultaneous campaigns.
Detroit datelined report says U A W president Homer Martin suspended 15 high officers and board members after a factional challenge to his leadership. Ten ranking supporters were also removed by the hostile board, with names including R J Thomas and Walter Reuther among those affected. Columbus January 20. Discharges of seven more state highway department employees were announced by Director Ravert L Beightler as part of a personnel purge. Dismissed were five landscape architects earning 225 dollars monthly including Leo Nolan Steubenville and A C Thompson Cleveland, plus Joseph J Mason Lima and Simon David Jackson. Beightler said the national highway research board awarded first prize to the Ohio department for the best highway landscaping job on the Medina Akron road on State Route No 18, a project done earlier under the Davey administration.
Mrs. Jenny Alexander 79 of 243 George Street fell in her Elyria home yesterday afternoon tripping over a rug and fractured her left arm. She slept in a chair and awoke to the smell of burnt meat. Alone, she waited about an hour before her daughter in law Agnes Alexander called to summon help. She was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital.
Sen. Rush D. Holt charges the administration padded relief rolls for political gain around elections. He cites 1937 to 1938 roll increases, WPA spending by state, and claims officials discussed adding enrollees before primaries. Wagner challenges Holt to name the official.
In CRISTOBAL January 20 Hans Schackow and Ernest Kuhrig were sentenced by Federal Judge Bunk Garnder to two years in prison after being convicted as German spies. Two other defendants Ingeborg Gutman and Gisberg Groos face trial at the February term for arrest while taking photographs at Fort Randolph, a fortified zone.
The National Tube Company Lorain plant will keep the current operations next week. Two blast furnaces and 10 open hearths remain active while the Bessemer converter and rail mill stay idle. Butt mill No. 6 and seamless mills Nos. 1 2 3 operate five days starting Monday. skelp mills are idle. schedule remains tentative pending orders.
