Edward Burda a 25 year old independent miner was recovered 115 feet underground after five days trapped in a collapsed anthracite mine at Mahanoy City. Rescue workers found his gloves before locating his body at 11 30 am. A priest administered last rites before removal. Burda was buried under coal and debris. rescue teams labored for hours to reach him. His brothers Joseph and Charles Burda were involved. Charles escaped after wriggling from his boots while Joseph was trapped two days on the 60 foot level.
