Stress hits Catholic priests harder than Protestant ministers

A Notre Dame sociologist finds 25 percent of Catholic priests consider quitting ministry due to severe emotional stress versus 12 percent of Protestant ministers. The study, analyzing 1,500 Catholic priests and 5,000 Protestant ministers, notes Catholics face more personal stress from conflicts with superiors, loneliness, and church stands on morals, while Protestants cite pay and perceived futility of church work. Younger clergy show more dissatisfaction, and lay surveys stress theology, engaging preaching, youth interest, and family counseling. About half of lay respondents support ordaining women.
