Romney suspends 40 percent of U.S. housing subsidies

Housing Secretary George Romney announced an indefinite halt to approvals for existing home mortgage subsidies under a $140 million program, while continuing payments for about 60,000 units. The move targets abuses and does not affect new housing subsidies, with a later decision pending.

Lorain College trustees reelect Conley as chairman for 1971

Lorain County Community College trustees unanimously reelected Edward J. Conley of Lorain as board chairman for 1971, extending his second five year term to 1975. Vice chairman is Mabel L. Ewing, praised for Conley’s high moral concepts. Joseph E. Cirigliano also sworn in for a new five year term.

Call For 1.5 Billion For Lake Erie Ontario Cleanup

A U S Canada joint study says Lake Erie is aging and Lake Ontario suffers serious pollution on both sides of the boundary. It urges $1.5 billion to halt pollution with emphasis on reducing phosphorus from detergents and upgrading municipal sewage plants.

Koehring contract at stake in Lorain union vote

Local 1242 of the United Steelworkers meet to decide on the Koehring Co contract in Lorain after a long strike. If approved, division president Ralph A. Clack will seek Milwaukee leaders to review moving 30 ton boom crane production to Waverly Town and 50 ton crane to Chattanooga, risking 180 jobs. Local president William Socotch wavered on recommending the proposal but may back it before the vote at Baumhart Road hall.

New York Police Stage Wildcat Walkouts Over Pay Ruling

Oil slick cleaned up off Kent coast after wrecks

Workmen cleaned oil from 40 miles of Kent beaches with three tugs spraying detergent. Officials suspect the Texaco Caribbean and Brandenburg wrecks caused the spill. Four men sought in Lorain bank robbery case

Lorain police and FBI seek a fourth man after three suspects are held in connection with the armed robbery of the Central Security National Bank of Lorain County. Giles Brown, 19, faces marijuana possession charges and was arrested near the bank. A car stop on the Ohio Turnpike yielded a .38-caliber revolver and cash, but those men were not charged in the robbery. Detectives and FBI agents are continuing the investigation.
