Investigators note bent accelerator and gear shift. cause given as chest injuries and heart disease possibly a heart attack prior to impact. Survived by husband Sergeant George W. Merritt, son George F. Merritt, sisters and a brother. Funeral plans pending with St Peter's North Ridgeville and Welsh funeral home.

Walter A Davies 81, Elyria resident for 16 years, died suddenly at 1 am at his home 243 Xth street. He leaves his widow Fannie and several nieces and nephews. Born in Cleveland May 20, 1870, he was the last of a family of eight. He had worked 25 years for the Edo Construction Company and was a vestryman of St. Andrew's church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Wednesday from the Edwin ter funeral home with burial in Lawn Cemetery.

New York reports a Northeast Air Convair carrying 35 or 36 people plunged into the East River near LaGuardia. All passengers and crew were rescued, with at least 23 treated for injuries or shock and five in serious condition. Stewards and pilots from Massachusetts describe exiting the aircraft last. Denis Whitcomb of Grafton. Both were hospitalized in Kenton and Columbus with skull fractures and internal injuries. Whitcomb remains unconscious in San Antonio Hospital in Keeton.

Famed Educator and Missionary Dies at Oberlin
Mrs. Alice M Williams 91, longtime Oberlin educator, missionary and lecturer, died Saturday at Allen hospital after a brief illness. She taught two of China's leaders and founded two schools while remaining active with Chinese and Japanese students at Oberlin College. Born in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, she studied at Oberlin and later married Rev. George L Williams. Continued on Page 2.

Deputy sheriffs held two Lorain men in the county jail as investigators probed damage at the Five Star Night Club on Elyria Avenue near Lorain Saturday night.
