Captain Carlsen swore an affidavit stating the Enterprise sank due to an act of God. He asserted the sinking was unavoidable and that no responsible party could be held liable for the loss.
Carlsen, skipper of the Enterprise, slept on a ship floor after a two week ordeal as the ship listed severely. He refused lucrative movie and book offers and avoided acclaim, while police investigated two separate traffic collisions in which several people were injured.
Cleveland reports its second traffic fatality of the year as 77 year old John Derites dies from injuries after being struck by a car yesterday at St. John s Hospital.
Five hundredth entry reports the 5th Air Force suffering its heaviest weekly losses in the Korean War. Sabrejets faced MIG-15s, with 3 American Sabres shot down and 12 MIGs downed. Other U.N. aircraft losses were from ground fire, while raids targeted Manchuria routes and rail assets.
Mae McHenry of Elyria is reported in serious condition at a Columbus hospital after an accident near Kenton at 6 p m yesterday. Corporal Dennis Whitcomb of Gratton was also injured, with Whitcomb in shock and his injuries undetermined.
Governor Frank J. Lausche announced he would run for a fourth term as Ohio governor. The filing deadline is February 3 for the Democratic nomination. Lausche made the statement from the governor’s mansion after earlier indications of a decision forthcoming.
News from Panmunjom reports truce negotiations bogged down over military airfields and voluntary repatriation of prisoners. U N delegates pressed Communist plans as they warned delays risk prolonging armistice talks. DiSalle indicated a statement would come about his governor bid and dates for a final decision remain unsettled.
A fire caused by a buried gas leak destroyed a home in Fyler Texas killing Ann Mayfield five and Digil D Mayfield four. Their mother Catherine Seabright twenty six and infant Danny Seabright eighteen months died later at a hospital.
A Otsego farm family of seven faced disaster when their home burned as party line subscribers refused to release their line to report the fire. Mrs. Walter Miller recounted three failed calls before neighbors aided, firemen arrived to find the blaze out of control. In another incident on Gulf road near Hilliard road, drivers Marvin L. Bixby and Jane Bixby were stunned but uninjured after a crash attributed to glare from oncoming lights. Charles M. George cited excessive speed and pleaded guilty to careless driving in Mayor's court. Also, George L. Marks of Cleveland filed for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator.
About 20 Ohio men in the Marine Voluntary Air Reserve have been ordered to active duty in the same call that included Ted Williams, star outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. Recalled from Ohio were three in Cleveland, four in Columbus, three in Cincinnati, three in Dayton and one each from Youngstown, Portsmouth, Akron, Toledo, Ravenna, Norwalk, and Letart Falls Meigs County.
The United Nations Assembly approved a veto free plan to curb aggression with a 31 to 5 vote and three abstentions. Russia and satellites opposed and abstentions from India Indo nesia and Argentina. Secretary Dean Acheson said the plan would let the General Assembly handle aggressor cases when a veto blocks action. Separately Floyd Green, former Columbus mayor, died at 52 from a cerebral hemorrhage in Newark after traveling there for real estate business. Venezuelan government radio banned several soap operas as part of tightened censorship. no public details beyond the action.
An 86 year old Morris Rivkind was struck and killed at the West River Furnace Street intersection as Daniel Feher 621 West 3rd Street faced a second degree manslaughter charge. Feher said he saw a man at the intersection and applied brakes but could not stop, the car skidding 85 feet, speed about 35 mph. The crash is the first fatal auto pedestrian incident in Elyria since July 1949. Continued on Page 2.
The Coast Guard said debris from the freighter Pennsylvania was sighted 24 miles southeast of its last position, signaling a likely sinking. Planes reported deck scraps and drums while no lifeboats were found, and winds since the last contact could have carried debris to the new site.
Washington report on Halsey McGovern refusing posthumous awards for his two sons fallen in Korea. Army offered Medal of Honor for 1st Lt Robert McGovern and Silver Star for 2nd Lt Jerome McGovern but the Arlington Cemetery fathers declined. Pentagon notes this marks a rare refusal. Truman made no comment. McGovern, 65, previously worked as an examiner for the Reconstruction Finance Corp and now runs a traffic consulting business.
Willam Sprenger of 540 Middle Street Amherst was taken to Amherst Hospital after a Route 112 west Ridge road accident. He suffered injuries to his right leg and back when his eastbound car collided with a left turning farm truck driven by Tom Clark of Albrecht Road. The crash occurred near the E W Brang yard. Sprenger’s car and the truck sustained heavy damage.
Washington Rep John Taber veteran of economy campaigns urged Congress to avoid red ink financing for the next fiscal year. He warned against appropriating more than the treasury can sustain as President Truman’s budget proposal of over 80 billion dollars looms for 1953 amid talks of possible tax increases being rejected by leading lawmakers.
Mrs Myrtle McGath 24 of 312 East Avenue was struck by a hit-skip driver in front of her home. She was found lying on the curb by a passerby at 830, taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital with pain in back and stomach but no broken bones on X-ray. The extent of injuries was not yet determined.
Lorain County Blood Bank's monthly report shows 123 transfusions in December across county hospitals. Elyna Memorial 47, St Joseph's 49, Allen Oberlin 26, Amherst 1. Fifteen volunteers were called and 150 donors recorded.
