Decline and hope for Ohio’s common tern revival

The common tern once nested along Lake Erie shores from Starve Island to Little Cedar Point but declined due to storms, high water, habitat loss, and herring gull predation. Now a Maumee Bay dredge spoil site hosts over 500 pairs with ODNR banding studies to track migration, offering a glimmer of recovery though future nesting space remains temporary.
