ITT Withdrawal Shapes ABC TV Funding Outlook

ABC TV remains the financial underdog after ITT pulled out of its proposed merger with ABC. Justice Department opposition halted the largest communications tie up, delaying a needed infusion of resources to bolster ABC’s programming against CBS and NBC. The network, smaller in affiliates and influence, relies on high budget programs and selective dramas to attract audiences while experimenting with new formats and event series. News coverage would benefit most from added funding, as broadcast journalism remains costly to produce.
