Vermilion River Overflow Prompts Lake Erie Inundation
River flooding from melting ice and springlike weather caused Vermilion River to overflow for more than a mile into Lake Erie. An ice jam south of the lake hindered water flow as boats and fuel tanks were swept into the lake. Numerous holiday gatherings and family visits occurred in the region with some residents hosting dinners amid flood concerns and damage.

Steel union delegates head for strike vote meeting
Atlantic City reporters say some 30 million CIO United Steelworkers headed for a crucial vote on President Truman's request to avoid an industry wide strike. Leaders led by CIO President Philip Murray planned sessions to decide whether to accept wage offers and delay walkouts while the Wage Stabilization Board probes demands for a 17 cent hourly pay hike and other concessions. The protest had been planned for 650,000 steel workers but was postponed by the wage policy committee as the convention convenes. Economic Stabilization officials stated price boosts are unlikely to be granted given last year’s earning record and Capehart costs.
