Ohio Woodcock Signals From March Arrival Spur Spring
The American woodcock is a herald of spring in Ohio, arriving in early March and displaying in dusk courtship flights with "peent" calls and aerial circles. Nests are ground-based with 3-5 eggs, hatch in about 21 days, and both parents brood the young. Woodcock habitats include thickets near streams, with many state wildlife areas marking singing grounds for viewing.
