Lorain is among nine Ohio finalists for Saturn Corp. plant sites sourced from more than 80 proposals. Cleveland was eliminated. Three Lorain County sites were considered, with the lakefront site east of Lorain Ford Assembly Plant as the primary option.
Lorain County officials, led by Lorain Mayor Alex Olejko, pressed GM in Columbus on a Saturn assembly plant to be sited near Cleveland. The $5 billion facility would employ 6,000 and produce 500,000 cars annually starting 1990, with land, water, highways, rail, and a tech training center as key criteria. Cleveland is out of contention, Elyria ruled out, and three counties pledge unity for a winning site.
