Lorain mayor pledges trek to win Saturn plant

Ohio Governor Celeste said the state remains in the running for GM's Saturn plant despite Ohio Supreme Court rulings allowing workers to sue employers after injuries. Newman Named Director of Lorain Tech Center

Eugene M. Voda became director of the Advanced Technology Center at Lorain County Community College after board approval. He replaces James Hill, resigned last October, and brings experience from Energy Conservation Marketing Co., Whirlpool, and Kirby. Voda holds a mechanical engineering degree from IIT and an MBA from Michigan State.

Elyria Eyeing Modern City Hall Designed by Kent State Students

Kent State architecture students won a contest sponsored by Ohio Edison to design a modern six story Elyria City Hall. The plan features a glass roof atrium, glass elevator to the mayor and utilities offices, open lunch space, cover walkways, and a four level parking deck. Mayor Keys and Councilman Bullocks weighed in as Elyria moves toward the long discussed project.

Last Minute License Plate Rush Clogs Elyria Bureau

Elyria residents endured long lines on the last day of the month to obtain new plates rather than stickers. Registrar David Kaszubinski noted heavy typing and stamping slowed service as the bureau handles updated plates, with a record crowd saying it was the worst day.

Lorain County Bank opens first Cuyahoga branch on Crocker Road

Officials from Lorain-Cuyahoga and Lorain County Bank broke ground for the bank’s first branch outside Lorain County. The 801 Crocker Road site will offer three drive-in lanes, four inside tellers, and a drive-through ATM. About 10 employees will be hired with lobby hours from 5 am to 4 pm Monday to Thursday, 9-5 Friday, and 9-12 Saturday. Construction is handled by The Don Beal firm of Elyria, with a June opening planned.

Agents seize cocaine at Cleveland Hopkins Airport

Narcotics agents seized about a pound of cocaine and arrested a 24 year old man at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Cuyahoga County sheriff’s Sgt James Veres said authorities in Dade County Florida had notified Cleveland authorities that a man was believed to be carrying cocaine aboard a Cleveland bound flight.
