Japan Vote Shows Slight Left Shift

Japan shifted slightly to the left in Sundays general elections but retained a pro Western stance. Official returns show Democratic Party leader Hatoyama securing a strong majority as conservatives ally with the West, while Liberals and Democrats fall short of a constitutional majority. Final results place Democrats 186 seats, Liberals 111, Left-Socialists 89, Right Socialist 67, Labor-Farmers four, Communists and others six. The Socialists narrowly block a move to revise the constitution and rearmament. Hatoyama’s personal victory marks a shift after wartime purge and solidifies anti Communist, pro Western policy.
