Ronald Banks, 26, pleaded guilty to the aggravated murder of his estranged wife Giovani, 33, in Elyria. He said he wanted to start healing for his family and received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 20 years. He had previously pleaded not guilty and insanity.
Cleveland AP reports Shannon Kidd, 19, rejected a plea deal in the abduction, rape, and shooting death of Mary Jo Pesho at Parmatown Mall Parma. Kidd and co defendant Mark DiMarco, 19, faced separate adult trials for the January 2 1996 killing. Kidd to stand trial May 4.
AKRON The elevator doors closed as Gene Scott Jr. laughed at a photographer after leaving the Summit County courtroom. Scott, 21, of Elyria, was sentenced by Judge Beth Whitmore to the maximum 18 years in prison for felonious assault and aggravated robbery in the Aug 24 beating and robbery of Raymond Peden in Northfield.
Elyria School Board approved a unanimous early retirement package that could see as many as 70 teachers and administrators leave in June, with another 15 possibly departing a year later. The first district buyout offer aims to save millions over five years by reducing teaching and administrative staff, with 85 teaching/administrative and 34 support staff applicants.
Wellington officials approve a 49 unit senior housing plan by St. Patrick's Manor Corp a Catholic Diocese of Cleveland project. The group received a 3.4 million HUD grant. Plans include a lot split to donate land for a city park and go before the Zoning Board in March.
