Economists blast Townsend Plan as fantastic policy
New York Feb 25 Economists' National Committee on Monetary Policy issued a warning and analysis denouncing the Townsend Plan as unsound and fantastical. They warn of heavy taxes on transactions and a burden that would harm wage earners and the poor, with potential to weaken government bond markets. The statement lists many signers from top universities and firms, arguing the plan fails to provide a sound basis for elderly aid.
