Audiences respond to Stromboli as film fights back costs
RKO reported Stromboli topped one million dollars initial intake after opening in 320 theaters last Wednesday. Through strong admissions in New York and other cities, the studio says the film has recouped about 60 percent of its cost and is now paid for. Critics largely disliked the movie, though Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini secured profits for the producers amid mixed audience reception.
