Cleveland Ohio February 22 Hazel Cowels 31 shot and killed her mother Nancy Cowels 50 at the Cowels home in Solon then killed herself. The younger woman had been ill and recently discharged from a city hospital after observation.
From Monroe Michigan a warrant is issued for Earl Locke of Cleveland in connection with the arrest of Mrs. Margaret Chandler who with state troopers seized bootleg liquor. Chandler says Locke hired her for the run and was in the second car allowed to go. Chandler pleaded guilty. her husband Edward is in Monroe.
Pittsburgh February 22. Fred Naskowitz 48 shot his wife at home near Wilmerding then shot himself. Police chief K R J Martin says the man was arrested after the incident as eight frightened children ran to neighbors for help. Mrs Naskowitz is in critical condition at McKeesport Hospital.
President Coolidge rejoined his duties at the White House after three days in seclusion due to a severe cold. He slipped out at breakfast to visit a threat specialist, then returned to executive offices to tackle a backlog of papers. Secretary Mellon was among early callers.
An elderly man named Johnson, 70, died in Chillicothe after an oil store room exploded while he attempted to light a lamp along the riverbank. Authorities investigate the accident and identify no further injuries.
City Council meets in the Council Chamber at 7 15 p m to consider plans for disposing of the White Way controversy. The plans, prepared by the arrests and sidewalks committee after discussions with property owners, will be announced to the public tonight.
In Richmond Indiana a 42 year old man Frank Buck was killed by a bullet fired through a window in what police described as an ambush. The shooting occurred at Buck’s home as investigators search for a gunman. Buck had lived in the city about 11 years and was well regarded. Police anticipated an arrest within a few hours.
Cleveland detectives followed advices from Huntington Indiana confirming two suspects arrested there were not the Lyons Brothers, the men sought in the case of Frank McGrath. The inquiry shifted as Norwalk Ohio detectives re examined Huntington prisoners for identification.
Firemen were called to 308 Tenth Street Sunday for a blaze caused by an overheated furnace. The fire damaged flooring near a hot air register and was put out with chemicals and water. Joseph Corbin Weld dies at 102 in Enfield England after surviving a dire heart prognosis 60 years earlier.
New York report details the countess of Catchart being released from Ellis Island after a ten hour sleep in a hotel Ambassadeur suite. She faces a temporary ten day liberty under a bond of $5000 and plans to see New York.
After a raid on Third Street officers found three 50 gallon mash barrels two quarts of whiskey and 50 gallons of wine. George Kecskes pleaded guilty to possession of liquor and was fined 500 and costs. Chief Stankard said the case could expose a broader source of liquor in the area. Others fined include N G Whitney for intoxication 1 and costs Walter Brink 5 and costs and William Yelich 10 for intoxication.
County Board of Education will name 15 men to succeed as school heads. Seale county superintendent will not seek re appointment next year, according to C. T. Winckles, board president.
Charles Brandon Booth spoke at the Open Forum in the Methodist church on The Child That No One Understands. He said today’s children face greater environmental challenges and hunger for companionship, noting fewer youths carry hip flasks now and urging renewed courage.
Burg Searfoss aged 24 and his wife Mildred were critically injured in a hospital at 71 Allegheny Street Kane after he shot her in the left breast when she refused to enter a death pact and then shot himself. Authorities reported both remain near death.
The birthday of George Washington is observed as a legal holiday with banks courts schools post offices closed. An address on Washington by Dr Edward Steiner of Chinnell College Iowa will be at First Congregational Church at 8 pm hosted by the Rotary Club and open to the public.
Princeton University today received a hitherto unpublished 1783 letter from George Washington to George Clinton of New York. The historical document was presented by an anonymous donor in Princeton, New Jersey.
Charles Baswell colored was arrested by Sheriff Fred Underhill and fined 9 dollars in Justice George's Court for intoxication after being found asleep in a farm pig pen between Elyria and Lorain. The farmer reported Baswell had disturbed pigs and claimed he was asked to leave a car where a friend and four girls were riding.
In New York two to four bandits robbed a Bronx jewelry shop during a holiday hour, taking about $15,000 worth of diamonds and $300 in cash. They struck owner Max Spielman, who pleaded to spare his inventory and was knocked unconscious with the revolvers.
A wire to Sheriff Sher from Buffalo reported J A Myers, wanted for stealing a car from Mrs Toulae Smith of Lorain, was held by federal authorities under the Dyer Act. The telegram said the car was recovered in good condition and can be returned to the owner with proper credentials. The Dyer Act provides heavy penalties for interstate traffic in stolen automobiles.
United States Attorney Emory E. Bickner disclosed that prohibition agents are under orders to buy cheap liquor for evidence. A ten cent gin or whiskey drink will unlock the padlock while champagne costs six to twenty five dollars a quart.
Ambassador and Mrs. Houghton host a Washington's birthday reception at Crew House in Washington. The American Woman's club also celebrates with a Washington's birthday dance this afternoon.
Three people were injured yesterday due to slick road conditions. Nicholas Ravic broke his right leg in a sled overturn near Stop 7 on the Yellow line and was hospitalized. K Y Detasio, in a Lake avenue truck collision with a Lorain driver Rosy Cutting, sustained head injuries and was taken to Memorial hospital. Sheriff Underhill and Deputy Clarence Adems cleared the wreckage. No arrests were made. Harry Barktey on Oberlin road also collided with a truck but was not hospitalized.
Police logged six auto accidents over the weekend due to slick paving. One crash at Furnaca and Lodi saw Avon Wrnckles and Fred Hadaway collide, injuring Knuckles’ steering gear and Hadaway’s left rear fender. Arthur Winslye, eastbound on Broadstatrork, struck a parked car at Has corner. Continued on Page 4.
Thomas Lobdell a postal clerk was left in critical condition with a fractured skull after three auto thieves assaulted him and stole his car in Cleveland. Police arrived after the thieves fled the scene leaving Lobdell injured at St Luke's hospital.
The Elyria Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles held an initiation for twenty new members, dubbed the Gerald o Nan Class, with Capt. Cloyd Wingard and the full uniformed degree team performing. FE. II, Keyser, state trustee, spoke on Old Age Pensions and Eagle insurance, as the lodge grows to about 1,400 members. A George Washington banquet followed, with Eagle orchestra providing music.
Mrs Frances Drake Nesbitt a 25 year old former Ohio State University tennis champion was found murdered in a half filled tub at her Troy Ohio home. Police plan to question her husband Coroner Hance said Nesbitt may have been dead around noon and the case remains baffling with no clues. Funeral services may include other questioned persons as officials wait until after the funeral. Thousands of residents passed the crime scene as guards keep entry restricted.
