Steel Union Board Urges Strike Delay Amid Wage Debate

Pittsburgh CIO President Philip Murray and United Steelworkers board discuss delaying a national steel strike set for midnight Saturday. They may urge the wage policy committee to keep production flowing until the Wage Stabilization Board issues a formal recommendation as government plans potential price adjustments to cover a wage hike. The union pushes for an 18 percent raise plus other concessions, including an open shop and guaranteed annual pay, a strike would cripple about 2,000,000 tons weekly.

Elyria Winners Named in Legion Essay Contest

Twenty four Elyria High School students are announced as Elyria winners in the eighteenth annual American Legion Essay Contest. Margaret Pratt leads the city winners with a five dollar grand prize. district prizes total fifty dollars with multiple first, second, and third place awards across seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. Prizes will be awarded March 4 at Amherst High School with plans for field trips and additional awards to top essays from each school.

Labor dispute at Pfaudier plant reaches ratification stage

United Auto Worker Local 1141 and Pfaudier Company announce that all issues are resolved in principal after negotiations on February 19 and 20. Final details to be ratified by union members and the company's Executive Committee before the strike ends and work resumes at an early date. A membership meeting is set for 12 30 p m Friday at Eagles Hall Broad Street for ratification.

Old Grist Mill At Rice's Dam Keeps Running

Mr and Mrs Rice a long time operators of the old grist mill at Rice's Dam near Chatham remain active in life and at the mill since 1836. The couple married in 1890 celebrate a long union with nine great grandchildren and a busy farm nearby. The mill, once part of a larger complex, continues to grind corn meal and wheat, with a saw mill nearby now gone.

Turnpike considers lowering northern Elyria road at added cost

Elyria mulls depressing the turnpike across the city north of Black River at an estimated 215000 added cost, to be paid by the city or benefited landowners. Engineering head E J Donnelly says officials will seek agreement on sharing the extra expense and warns property owners about “outfits” offering higher prices through intermediaries.

Monkey Shines Leads To Hospital And Jail

In Lorain a monkey named Zeke spurned Miss Susan Bach's advances and clung to her boyfriend Sherman Bigley. Bach stabbed Sherman with a knife during a confrontation after a night out at Five Star Night Club. Sherman hospitalized then released. Bach jailed on her birthday.

Land-Based Pilot Model To Be Built

Washington reports the government ordered immediate construction of an advanced design atomic submarine engine by General Electric at West Milton for a land based pilot model. The project aims to accelerate a fleet of atomic submarines, with the Nautilus due for launch in 1954 and top speeds around 35 knots. Westinghouse and Electric Boat are also tied to the broader program at Arco Idaho and Groton Connecticut respectively, with hulls and engines to be developed in coordination with the AEC.

Elyria nurse in critical condition after fatal collision

Phyllis L. Giebel a 23 year old nurse at Crile Veterans Hospital was critically injured when her car struck the rear of a stationary vehicle driven by Maude A. McClimans 69 of Sharpe road on West Bagley road in Olmsted township near Berea. McClimans was killed at the scene. Giebel showed brief improvement but remained unconscious most of yesterday as her mother Mrs. Edna Giebel stayed at her side in Berea Community Hospital.
