City Council Approves Broad Spending and Upgrades
City council approved about 40000 in expenditures for gear and materials needed now or soon. They authorized up to 13000 for a new street department grader and up to 4500 for a 2 1/2 ton dump truck, plus 10000 for spring street repair and 5000 in slag for cinder road work. They budgeted 2000 to repair and rewind two compressor motors at the sewage disposal plant and 1000 for civilian defense expenses. Fire hydrants purchase of 20 was approved, and clerk of the sinking fund pay raised to 900 annually. Committees were urged on chlorine purchases for the water dept and coal supplies, while Elyria civilian defense fund share was discussed. A new car for the service director was referred to committee and a justice of the peace pay raise to seven dollars a day was approved on second reading. Hawthorne street paving project was approved.

The Elyria City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing an increase for The Elyria Telephone Co. The measure, urged by Councilman John McDonough, will be sent to the Public Utilities Commission ahead of a scheduled hearing. Mayor Henry W. Ault and Solicitor Richard Baird plan to attend. LaGrange also opposes the raise and will be represented at the hearing. The council also opposed HB 95 to abolish city health departments in small cities, forwarding it to the House health committee. the change would create a regional district reducing local control.

Fifteen Lorain County youths will represent the county at the State Forensic Meet in Columbus March 16 and 17. At the Lorain County Speech Meet at Grafton High School last night Ralph C. Three Die In Lorain Ax Murders And Suicide
Lorain police and county authorities investigated a brutal ax murder of 52 year old Mercedes Maltos and her 18 year old daughter Angela Romariez and the death by own action of Mercedes’s husband Manuel Maltos 55. A 38 caliber suicide left clues including a hat coat and a clothes line. Bodies of the women were found in the basement after Maltos died in a creek. Neighbors reported no warnings as the perpetrator cleaned the scene before authorities found the murders.
