Twin tragedies spark rare Mayo Clinic face transplant

Andy Sandness received a donor face after a 41 month sequence of surgeries at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The donor Calen Ross, a 19 year old whose widow Lilly consented, enabled a full facial reconstruction that restored jaw, nose, mouth and expression. Sandness, 31, resumed ordinary life including meals and social activities, while adjusting to his new appearance.
