Fraud charges tied to Nicaragua Co. raid in Chicago
In Chicago on February 18 federal agents raided the Nicaragua Co. offices in the Exchange building. Frank D. Bittinger, Weary A. Burnham, and Orlin Vincent were arrested and arraigned before United States Commissioner Foote on fraud charges for fraudulent use of the mails. Bond set at 5000 for Bittinger and 500 each for others. hearing adjourned ten days. The company claimed to buy plantations in Nicaragua and sell US made products with promises of huge profits. stock offering began in 1900 with 57000 sold in about two weeks.
