The North Ridgeville school board plans a secret session tomorrow to decide on renewing Superintendent Don Swartz contract. Board President Edwin Charles confirmed the renewal would be on the agenda, with a March 1 written notice deadline for any decision.
In Reggio Calabria police used tear gas as rock and fire bomb attacks erupted after the regional council chose Catanzaro as district capital. Residents woke to radio news of the decision and street clashes continued for months. The school board's contract talks with Swartz loom unresolved as a public meeting adjourned to February 25.

An Army board of mental experts has ruled Lt William L Calley Jr sane in every respect. The finding was announced by military judge Col Reid W Kennedy during Calley’s murder court martial in Fort Benning Georgia as copies of the report were shared with both prosecution and defense.
Four major New York banks including Bankers Trust and Chase Manhattan cut their prime lending rate by 0.25 percentage points to 5 percent. First National City and Chemical Banks joined, marking the fourth cut this year as the Federal Reserve approved a discount rate reduction to 4.4 percent from 5 percent.
Gerald Benn aged 48 of New London died when his northbound sedan struck by a westbound tractor trailer at the Rt 18 Fitchville River Road junction. He was pronounced at Gerber Funeral Home Wakeman by Huron County coroner. Mourton 28 of Wellington drove the truck. Benn pinned in wreckage. Eastman Funeral Home New London handling arrangements.

Officials from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in Cleveland say marijuana LSD amphetamines heroin are readily available in Lorain County. Local police and educators report rising soft drug use, with narcotics reaching junior high levels, while some districts see limited hard-drug activity and uncertain sources.
Lorain County officials including Lorain County School Supt Wayne Whyte and Juvenile Probation Officer John D McCrea address drug problems in schools. Whyte says no district is immune and McCrea notes soft drugs widespread with a rise in hard drug use over the past year in the Lorain area. A youth survey is planned for Elyria tomorrow.
