U S pilots report a protective strike on a North Vietnamese missile site while an accidental bombing of a CIA run base at Long Cheng Laos kills 10 and wounds 20 locals including Men tribe members.
A congressional report and Penn Central records show Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans owned about 38,000 shares in Great Southwest Corp holdings tied to Penn Central. The 1970 board meeting notes cite plans for $200 million in federal loan guarantees before bankruptcy.
A UPI report says a congressional committee charged two Penn Central executives with using the railroad assets as collateral for a private investment club. The Penphil group parlayed an $18,500 cash stake into $83,500, backed by a $1.8 million loan from Chemical Bank of New York Trust Co. The probe centers on former CFO David C. Bevan and adviser Charles J. Hodge and alleges a pattern of mis management prior to Penn Central’s 1962 merger era.
The U S Command said last week total U S troops in Vietnam fell by 2 100 to 332 900 with 1 555 more being prepared for withdrawal. This marks the sixth Nixon cutback aiming to reach 284 000 by May 1.
