Silvery Bells Of Rome Owe Much To Family Makers
In Rome's Borgo Pio quarter the Lucenti bell foundry, famed for silvery toned church bells for over 300 years, preserves a secret of harmony. Francesco Lucenti recalls a lineage from Ambrogio to modern times, noting conflicts with political upheaval ended long ago as the family vows to remake bells melted by war. The firm counts the Vatican and churches as chief customers.

Sound Waves Used To Kill Pests
Dr Isadore Rudnick of Pennsylvania State College described experiments with colleagues Clayton H Allen and Hubert Frings using powerful ultrasonic waves to kill mice cockroaches yellow fever mosquitoes blowflies fire bats mealworms and caterpillars at the Accoustical Society of America meeting in Los Angeles The waves were 10 000 times louder than the human pain level and caused death by heat and vibration at close range He warned humans could be killed by the same method if a sufficiently large sound beam existed.
