Secretary Krug warns the nation that private enterprise cannot finance looming needs to conserve and develop natural resources. He calls for stockpiling substitutes, expanding fuel and power, increasing oil output, and accelerating research to avert bottlenecks as population rises toward 165 million by 1990.
Elyria public schools superintendent Harold Ebling told the school board that the Ohio Chamber report overstated the per teacher increase in state aid. He said Elyria lists 176 teachers eligible for the raise, not 159 as reported, which would raise each share beyond the chamber’s figure of 229.97 dollars.
Fifteen members of the 1937 class of the M. B. Johnson School of Nursing at Elyria Memorial Hospital passed the Ohio state board nurses examinations. Clerk treasurer W O McClellan reported no final appropriations yet, but county auditor certification shows 838 15238 available for general fund, with 527 131 from taxes and 285 47419 from other sources. The bond retirement fund is budgeted at 116 33201, while federal and other funds include 25 300 for plan costs, 47 500 for cafeteria, 1 19484 relief, and 10 80 Massey Trust.

Lorain County sheriffs department joined the search for three girls reported missing from the Oberlin Lorain County Children's Home. Lois Binsley 15 Bonnie Fowler 14 and Marion Sutter 14 left the facility around 11 p.m. their disappearance reported by Superintendent Lloyd Gamble at 12:22 a.m.
Cold continues to grip Ohio with temperatures not rising above 20 degrees. Readings across cities from Mansfield to Cincinnati show deep freeze while gas shortages hamper industry and 30,600 workers remain idle. State liquor stores relying on gas heaters will stay closed until weather moderates and officials foresee more snow and continued cold.
Elyria school board members oppose changing the state law requiring a 65 percent favorable vote for bond passage. The council delayed an ordinance to buy a car for the city engineer's department citing legality concerns from Solicitor Richard Baird. He argued bond money earmarked for sewers should not fund vehicles. Other vehicle purchases were approved from various funds, while discussion on the engineer’s car continued to next committee meeting. Cincinnati and Lincoln brief items follow.
Washington John L Lewis warned of possible sudden action by soft coal miners over a pension plan. He says the union reserves the right to enforce the contract if the industry fails to fund pensions for about 491,000 diggers. Operators’ spokesmen doubt a definite 30 day termination exists under current Taft Hartley terms.
Elyria businesses are asked to help by providing manpower for military burial services as about 40 bodies are expected to be returned from overseas. Nine volunteers per service are needed, including color bearers, guards, and pallbearers, with advance notice to foremen.
Adolph Schindler aged 50 died of a heart attack at 9 30 last night while on the mid afternoon shift as a punch press operator at Niles Steel Products He was a resident of Eisha for 30 years coming from Bryant Indiana His wife Dorothy died two years ago He is survived by five children and by his mother brothers and sisters none residing in this vicinity His body is at Bittner Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.
Common Pleas Judge D. 4. Cook left this week for a vacation trip to Mexico leaving all common pleas court work to be handled by Judge Guy B. Findley. He is expected to return the latter part of February, it was reported in court circles.
The B. F. Goodrich Chemical Company announced plans to build a three million dollar general chemical plant in Avon Lake on land it already owns. Construction could start in spring or early summer, with four buildings including a three story processing unit and a boiler machine shop and office. Girdler Corporation and Sam W. Emerson Company lead engineering and construction work.
City council gave first reading to a measure restoring Daylight Saving Time for the year. It would advance clocks one hour at 2 p m on the last Sunday in April and set them back at 2 a m on the last Sunday in September, mirroring Cleveland's plan.
Residents along West avenue and 18th street opposed a zoning change to Commercial for two city lots. The council unanimously rejected the third reading of the ordinance. Other zoning items involved fair grounds trailer camp zoning and Taylor Street industrial zoning with height and bulk adjustments pending.
Elyria school board approved employment of extra help for the Gates Hospital School for Crippled Children to assist Miss Foley with bedside instruction. Superintendent Eibling noted many students require on-site teaching, with state supervisor Della Leviner agreeing. The state will reimburse the district, as in prior years, for the additional hourly staff. Fifteen children are now enrolled at the hospital school.
Deputy sheriffs hold a one year old South Amherst man for investigation in connection with two burglaries Saturday night. The E A Ruth grocery and the South Amherst Builders and Supply Co. were hit, with about 130 dollars, a typewriter, paint brushes, and a safe containing around 1200 dollars in cash stolen. Local ad mentions Tycoon and John Wayne.
