President Truman urged Congress to curb inflation warning that without action the nation faces an economic crash. He displayed a chart of rising living costs and said inflation will continue to a disastrous outcome unless controls are restored and production alone is not the answer.
Probate Judge Horace H. Nye withdraws from the Republican primary race for reelection to the probate and juvenile court post, leaving opponent Municipal Judge Malcolm Thomson in a contested field while Nye notes he will not pursue an independent bid. Nye this term ends Feb 9 1949 after 12 years in office with a yearly salary over 7100. Funeral plans are set for John Woodall 4 and his brother Donald 3 who died in a trailer fire started by an oil stove.
The weather service forecast a reinforced cold front unlikely to bring drastic changes. Northern regions remain in sub normal conditions as a new front moves from Canada. Snow covered mid Atlantic with Blairsville pa reporting 18 inches and New York City seeing continued impacts from last month.
Miss Lois Davis daughter of A. Davis 229 West Bridge Street was among the nurses passing the State Board examination. A 1944 Elyria High School and People's Hospital Akron School of Nursing graduate, she is on the People's Hospital Nursing staff and expected to continue there. Ohio digouts from one of winter s heaviest snowfalls as Weather Service warns more snow tonight and tomorrow. State highway department reports slippery roads south of Bryan through Sandusky Ashtabula Portage and Ottawa counties with routes 6 322 224 and 763 affected. Public transit delayed busses trains late and air traffic halted at several fields.
Elyria and Lorain area nurses are listed among the 1227 who passed state registered nurse certificates. Phrilis Wagner Birmingh am June Herr Kathryn Mischka of Elyria Nancy Lund from Lorain and others from Lorain are noted. Wagner at St. Joan's Hospital Cleveland and Elyria Memorial. Mischka from Fairview Park Hospital Cleveland has a BS degree from Fern College and may pursue postgraduate supervision work.
WELLINGTON Mrs Abraham George of South Main street is in Oberlin hospital with injuries from last Saturday on Route 38. Elyria faces a factional dispute as two Republican groups elect delegates. City chairman Clifford Strean filed petitions for 15 of 22 precincts in Elyria with candidates including Josephine Far Nina Ramser Myles Farmer and Stella Schilleman among others across wards 1 to 5.
Primary elections loom with mixed contests across the county. Democrats nominate for most offices with Thomson unopposed in probate. Republicans contend for county commissioner sheriff recorder and coroner, with multiple candidates in each race. Lorain County commissioners and the Child Welfare Board will hold a joint meeting next Monday to discuss dissolving the board and coordinating its activities with the county welfare department. High school seniors from Lorain County will gather at Lincoln Gage at Elrma High School for the statewide general scholarship test. Top 30 percent of the graduating class qualify. Exam covers English history mathematics science and reading starting at 9 am with a 50 cent fee. Ohio State University agr iculture test at 1 pm at 426 West Third Street is free for senior boys.
Robert Urquhart named general superintendent of Lorain Works National Tube Company a United States Steel subsidiary. He succeeds Bradford C Colcord who resigned to become president of Woodward Iron Birmingham Als. Urquhart has worked for US Steel since 1914 rising to open hearth supervisor and later assistant general superintendent at Homestead Works.
Four members of a Porterfield family in Ohio were killed when their automobile was struck by a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train near Belpre. Victims identified as E. P Carson a farmer and property owner and sons Eddie 22 George 15 and John 13.
Three Elyria men were hurt as two small General Industries buildings were wrecked by blasts and fire at the plant late last night. The facility was shut down today with damage estimated in the thousands. Gail Wolf 34 and Lee Reed 60 suffered burns, while fireman Ora Lysaght was injured when a window was broken as he entered the scene. Reed and Wolf received hospital treatment. Lysaght did not. The first alarm sounded at 10:06 p m and a second eight minutes later summoned all city units.
Orville Wright leaves Oberlin College a 300000 bequest in his will, and states the Wright airplane may stay in England’s South Kensington Museum unless he later withdraws it. He also provides for Mabel Beck, his secretary, to receive 3000 yearly for life, and for Carrie Grumbach a 2000 annual stipend plus the estate to be divided among relatives.
A early downtown fire destroyed a Retail Merchants Delivery Inc warehouse, causing an estimated 300000 dollar loss to the one story building housing 75 trucks and buses and merchandise. Two firemen were slightly injured. the blaze began from a truck backfire. Six night mechanics fled to safety.
A blaze at the Morning Albany Times Union plant in Albany caused about 250000 dollars in damage and interrupted publication. Fire began in the basement of a four building complex occupied by Alfred Equipment Co. Firefighter Emil Durant died in the incident as apparatus and belongings were damaged.
Fire at a Springfield auto garage damaged 22 cars and a nearby residence. Estimated losses total about 120000 dollars with six new coupe cars and a garage area flooded by water. One firefighter was slightly injured.
London radio Moscow reported that the Soviet Union and Romania signed a mutual aid military pact to defend against aggression from Germany or any other state. Soviet Foreign Minister V. Molotov called the move aimed at curb fomenters of a new war in the imperialist camps.
