President Nixon asks Congress for 2.2 billion in higher taxes and postal rates to balance a hard choices budget and produce a 1.3 billion surplus to fight inflation. He sent a 200.8 billion spending plan, cut defense and space outlays, and proposed selling assets including Alaska Railroad stock to fund needs.
Three United Steel Workers Local 1104 officials in Lorain including president Carl Roberts were suspended a year by a Philadelphia panel. James Gedling editor of the Lorain Labor Leader and John Romick were also punished for urging the union paper to influence the last election. Gedling’s sentence is held in abeyance due to illness per a union spokesman.
The U S command said Communists shelled 114 Allied bases and towns over the weekend, a volume described as the heaviest in a month. At least 22 Americans were killed and 152 wounded, with three U S soldiers and six Huey helicopters reported lost in separate incidents.
Washington officials seek settlement to avert a nationwide rail shutdown before the court ordered 10 day cooling off period ends next week. Negotiators from unions and railroads doubt a rapid accord after a brink moment when four shopcraft unions faced a strike and a threatened lockout. Assistant Secretary W J Usery arranged new talks with top negotiators William P Winpisinger and John P Hutz ready to attend government called meetings.
Cleveland Police Chief William Ellenburg publicly denied charges that he took protection money from a Mafia run abortion ring while a Detroit police official. Mayor Stokes backed him as he planned possible lawsuits against the Detroit Free Press and attorney Burns.
Avon Lake Municipal Court Judge Robert Jenson circulates nomination petitions to run for the Lorain County Common Pleas Court Domestic Relations division. Petitions must be filed by Wednesday. Jenson, 12 years as municipal judge, would face John Kelena and Henry Treber if he enters the race.
Lorain County grand jury issued secret indictments against Donald J. Coates and three others for larceny by trick at Lorain County Savings and Trust Co Midway Mall Aug 16 1968. Coates jailed pending arraignment. co defendants Diorio Grisham Drago were named. federal juries previously acquitted them after a three week trial.
The 100 to 120 percent rise in Lorain County hospital costs over a decade is mainly due to a matching rise in hospital employee wages. Payroll is the largest expense, about 70 percent, while new cardiac units and advanced tests add costs. New services require skilled staff and equipment funded by subsidies and user charges.
A winter weather alert warns of a cold wave with a mix of rain and snow turning to snow flurries. Winds will be strong as western counties see much colder temperatures, with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s and tonight dipping to well below zero in the northwest and single digits to the southeast. Six more juveniles face charges in an auto theft ring tied to 47 thefts uncovered by the State Highway Patrol. Earlier, six others were charged and four await Juvenile Court appearances. Investigators say 26 youths aged 13 to 17 from Keystone and Midview districts participated over about three and a half months.
