Bomb explosion rocks Shaker Heights police building

Police say a teenage boy carried a long wooden box into the municipal building before a blast leveled the 11 year old structure injuring 16 people including five officers a judge and the clerk of courts. Bomb squads and FBI agents joined the investigation as authorities weighed a bombing versus a gas explosion.

Elyria Man Injured In Blast At Shaker Heights Police

An Elyria man visiting the Shaker Heights police department to check on his stolen car was injured in an explosion that sent 16 people to two hospitals. Robert Dangerfield, 29, of 932 Harvard Street, remained in fair condition in the ICU at St Luke's Hospital in Cleveland.

Ridgeville guts Glauner bid for council seat

In North Ridgeville the council voted 4 to 4 to uphold a law director ruling that Richard Glauner is ineligible for Ward A council seat because he is a public employee and a teacher. Glauner indicated he would likely not appeal the decision.

Dr Clement first Negro to seek Ohio Senate nomination

Dr Kenneth W Clement former campaign manager for Mayor Carl Stokes becomes the first Black candidate to seek the Democratic nomination for US Senate in Ohio He joins Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn in the race Clement says he is better suited to represent Democratic ideals and Ohio people than a wealthy developer or a former astronaut.

Council overrides Reichlin's pay veto

Elyria City Council voted unanimously to override Mayor Reichlin's veto on the 1970 temporary appropriations ordinance authorizing councilmen's pay through April. All 11 council members will now receive full salaries, with the four first term Republicans joining the majority in accepting $2770 per year.

Tavern operator robbed of $3000 in Elyria Township

A lone gunman bound Melvin Shullick hand and foot and robbed Shullick's Four Corners Tavern on North Ridge Road with more than $3,000 in cash. Deputies found footprints and tire tracks after the suspect fled east through the tavern.

Stokes probes ex Detroit mayor links to Cleveland chief Ellenburg

Cleveland Mayor Carl Stokes began a personal inquiry into alleged ties between Cleveland Police Chief William Ellenburg and the Mafia. Former Detroit Mayor Jerome Cavanagh helped Ellenburg win the job, and a Detroit bribery claim names Ellenburg and two other officers. Stokes sent investigators to Detroit. Ellenburg defends himself and says he will stay unless asked to leave.

Cold snap grips Lorain County as thaw reverses

Overnight temperatures plunged from a high near 4 degrees to a low around 12 to 22 below zero with fresh 2 to 4 inches of new snow piling up in Lorain County. North Ridgeville observer Raymond Diederich noted an 11 degree low around 5 am and warned the deep freeze could linger tonight as wind and clouds keep temperatures in the teens.

Corts files petitions for senate reelection

State Sen Robert J Corts of Elyria filed petitions seeking election to the 13th District senate seat. He was appointed a year ago to fill a vacancy caused by Harry Jump. Corts faces primary challenger Richard Reneh, a former Ohio Highway Patrol officer, with Huron and Lorain counties in the district.
