Mine Workers Tell Of Needy Families
Union delegates at the United Mine Workers convention pressed for more relief during strikes and lockouts but rejected special assessments. West Virginia and Alabama miners described needy families during last spring’s six week coal stoppage. Leaders argued for a uniform relief policy financed by small member assessments, while the secretary treasurer warned such moves would be costly and unnecessary given state unemployment relief. Changes to the constitution empowered fines for missed meetings, renamed CIO, and shifted the annual convention date. President John L. Lewis said the conference would end today with a brief executive board meeting Friday.
