Washington reports indicate ratification of the Canada United States St Lawrence Seaway treaty may fail in Congress. Senators Lucas Slattery oppose any pact limiting Lake Michigan flow to 1500 feet per second, fearing harm to inland waterways and railroads. With 33 votes needed for a second defeat, opposition from coastal shipping and lingering 1934 opponents cloud the path to approval.

Salaries Raised in County Auditor’s Office Amid Cuts
County Auditor C Kelser granted monthly raises to Hazel Biesel from 105 to 125 and Ava Masters from 85 to 105 despite countywide salary cuts.
