Expect Miners To Demand 30 Hour Week

In Columbus Ohio February 1 1940 2400 delegates at the United Mine Workers Golden Jubilee convention considered resolutions for higher pay and a 30 hour week in bituminous and anthracite coal. They would refer wage and contract demands to a scale committee with a goal of best possible agreement with operators. Current pay runs seven hours a day 35 hours a week with $6 minimum daily wage in the North and $5.80 in the South. Adjournment was anticipated but debate on remaining resolutions could extend the meeting. The convention pledged to seek a Liberal presidential candidate to carry the New Deal forward after 1940. No endorsement was made for Roosevelt's third term.
