Lorain county total tax valuation stands at 250,369,523 with a slight drop from last year’s 250,482,840. County Auditor Monroe H. Welty cites blanket reductions in real estate values in some districts as cause. Elyria grows from 57,099,495 to 58,213,235, and Lorain rises from 87,179,430 to 88,401,080, while rural areas show stagnation.
Washington dispatch reports that most Republican lawmakers favor Hoover renomination but insurgent voices hint at changing the party. Senator Norris says he will push progressive ideas within the GOP and opposes a Dewey third party without funds or time, while debating electoral reforms and realignment prospects ahead of 1932.
Paris dispatch reports Marshal Joseph Joffre in grave condition after an eight day old operation for arteritis and gangrene which led to amputation of his right foot. Monks nurse him at Saint Jean de Dieu as doctors monitor his deteriorating state and syncope episodes.
Ohio announces Frank C. Henry of Marietta as state fire marshal in Governor-Elect White's cabinet. Henry, longtime ally of White, previously served as state fire marshal investigator and assistant, and ran the survey that aided White's campaign. Salary is 4500 dollars. office under Commerce.
Delaware county authorities seek yeggs who knocked the safe combination off at the Farmers' Exchange in Lewis Center during the night. They escaped with 150 dollars in cash and 4000 dollars in checks after entering through the cellar.
F J Colladay alias William Unger, held at Cleveland, was brought back to state prison today after escaping six years ago. He was received January 27, 1923, for passing an $8.50 check and a balance of 326,146.56 at Peoples State Bank Detroit. Escaped June 7, 1924.
SANDUSKY, O. Dec. 27. To protect his roadside stand near Venice from night raiders, William Steak set a shotgun to fire upon opening the door. This morning an unidentified man was found dead with the gun’s contents in his abdomen. Sheriff Parker and Coroner Grierson investigate. Action against Steak depends on the coroner’s finding.
Washington December 27. The Federal Reserve Board announced a reduction in the rediscount rate at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland from three and a half to three percent, effective Monday.
Elyria's police court handled 432 cases in 1930, with 373 city ordinance and 59 state law charges. Intoxication led city cases at 150, followed by disorderly conduct 90 and reckless driving 46. Other city matters included shooting, disorderly houses, peddling, and assault. State cases featured petit larceny at 17, plus various assaults, trespassing, liquor offenses, auto theft, embezzlement, and break ins.
A report from Assab, Jeritrea, states about 200 African tribal raiders were annihilated in a protracted attack by native troops under Italian colors near Mogorros in Dankalia, northeast Ethiopia. The conflict lasted one day and night, and eight troopers were killed.
Columbus Ohio December 27 Governor Cooper announced the re appointment for one year as Director of Public Works A T Connar The appointment follows a constitutional provision that the director of public works serves a one year term with each appointment Connor will begin his new term January 2.
Columbus Ohio December 27 Logan firm Hocking Construction Co. Logan placed the low bid of 32197.89 on a Green County highway project for 2718 miles of grading and culvert construction on the Dayton Chillicothe Road in Beaver Township. The contract will be awarded next week.
Chicago reports a major stock swindle involving forged Fox Film certificates and other firms. About 89,000 in fake shares were found, with 2,900 forged Fox shares recovered. Louis Liss was arrested after attempting to cash a 12,000 check. Authorities in Chicago and New York warned brokers and started a nationwide audit of circulating stocks. Fox Film said the matter does not involve the company.
Miss Mable Crooks, 23, formerly of Lancaster and supervisor at the Maramour exclusive restaurant, slashed her throat with a razor in an early today attempt. Police say jealousy over John Bennett of Columbus motivated the act. Bennett was questioned for two hours and released.
Columbus reports say Thomas W Flem ing a former Cleveland councilman now in Ohio Penitentiary on bribery charges would face opposition from Cleveland officials and Governor Myers Y Cooper has been advised. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Ray T Miller wired the governor after news of a pardon plea hearing next Monday.
FL Ives, owner of the LaPorte property, announces plans for a modern air base near LaPorte with runways, hangars, and a plane manufacturing and rebuilding plant. Additional land will expand the landing field. water and gas access are sought. A Michigan plant may relocate here if arrangements succeed. A Chamber of Commerce conference in two weeks will review the proposal.
Police search for Rollie Earl, 32, of State Street, in a shooting on Oberlin Avenue near 18th Street that wounded Earl McGriff, 16th Street. McGriff, with William Braden, says Hart fired a shotgun at about 1:30 AM. McGriff was hospitalized with arm and leg injuries.
Norwalk Ohio December 27 Coroner C L Bell ruled the death of Arthur Backenstow 23 of Shiloh accidental. He was shot in the back during a rabbit hunt when a companion lost control of a gun and buckshot struck him.
London reports Lord Melchett aged 62 died after a brief illness. Formerly Sir Alfred Mond he headed directorates including Mond Nickel and Imperial Chemical Industries. A minister and privy councillor, he shifted political alliances after the Liberal era.
Elyrians read more than ever with 100172 books circulated by yesterday, a record high. November led with 10221 loans, total 1930 fiction dominates at about 65000, adults 42000, children 23000, and lists distributed to schools boosted demand for children’s titles.
At the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland an inspection revealed a second year midshipman had secretly wired the Bancroft hall dormitory to control the elevators lights and telephone system. He built a master clock behind his door to align timing and could disrupt or disguise his tardiness. The offender has been asked to resign and his roommate disciplined. the youth is reportedly a former University of Kansas student and son of a Marine Corps officer.
Joseph R. Nutt of Cleveland, treasurer of the Republican National Committee, demanded a public apology from Senate Investigating Chairman Gerald Nye for labeling a Washington fund a slush fund. Nutt said the $50,000 special campaign fund was for bookkeeping, $2,000 spent, and all expenditures reported or to be accounted for in the January expense statement.

A Western carrier reduction to two cents per mile leads a broader plan expected to spread east and south. railroad men deny a fare war saying the cuts aim to recapture volume lost to buses planes and autos.
