Washington reports Secretary Mellon predicts 1925 will be the most prosperous year in thirty years with strong economic policies. He cites tax cuts, debt reduction, and prudent administration as keys to sustained progress and orderly recovery after war.
Hobart Oklahoma December 26 breaking of the Babbs school house fire on Christmas Eve left at least 33 dead and many injured with figures rising. The tragedy spread through farms and houses as a candle and lamp caused the blaze and panic. Survivors described a chaotic exit through windows as the building burned with charred remains identified in a growing list of victims.
Secretary Henry Miller of Lorain County Automobile Club reports from Secretary of State Thad Brown to halt 1925 auto tag issuance. Defective enameled tags blur or detach when washed. owners may seal with varnish. State department investigates the tag problem and requests return of issued tags.
Francis E. Bush alias Burch, 30, and wife Ruth, 24, arrested in Detroit after being identified in connection with a $17,000 Cleveland holdup on November 26. Victims Lenox and Switzer identified Bush. two accomplices George Schorr and Cameron Moore already jailed for 25 years. Mrs Bush wore mink when mobile getaway planned.
Sacramento reports Mrs Pearl Bayless, noted lecturer, says American hula dancers are too wild and undignified compared with Hawaiian performers. She claims the dance originated in the islands and advises banning the more vulgar style from local displays.
A baby boy found dec 11 in a traveling bag at Wellington Big Four depot was adopted by Mr and Mrs William Gerrick Elyria Twp West River Rd. The newborn weighed 8 pounds at discovery and 9 1/2 pounds by Christmas. Judge H C Wilcox led the adoption hearing and the child has no known parents.
Lawrence Snyder, 60, an inmate at the County Infirmary, was moved by sheriff's deputies to the Massillon state hospital for treatment on Wednesday.
Washington December reports say religious pilgrimages to Mecca drained Java’s purchasing power by about 45 million guilders this year. A trade commissioner notes roughly 45 000 Javanese pilgrims left for Mecca, taking cash from the small nation and reducing import value by about ten percent.
Columbus reports a warm spell followed by a push of much colder air. The Weather Bureau expects temperatures to drop near zero in parts of Ohio tonight with readings from Toledo to Cleveland and Cincinnati near degrees, while a Saturday freeze settles over the region. Across the nation, much colder air spreads from the Atlantic states toward the Gulf Coast with snow in the Great Lakes area and fair conditions elsewhere.
Springfield reports four people were instantly killed this morning when a train struck their automobile at a grade crossing on South Charleston Pike. Victims include Elijah E. Wilson 33 motorman Harry Wilson 25 brother Mrs Gladys Wilson and Marjory Wilson 9 of Springfield.
Firemen from No 1 station responded to two Christmas morning alarms at 11:18 and 11:20 from James Seward 312 Fourth Street and Marty Burnham 206 Second Street. Causes were a waste paper basket fire and lint in a hot air register, both with no damage. A chimney fire at William Rennie 333 Harvard Avenue occurred about 6 pm Wednesday. Also reported: a collision at Lake Avenue and Bond Street involving FE C Edwards Lorain and Ray Flower Elyria and a Ford overturning on the Cleveland road in Ridgeville with minor damage and no injuries.
In Cuyaunga county early colonists in Ridgeville Columbia Eaton and Middleburg formed a company led by Captain Calvin Hoadley to defend against Indians and British. After Hull's surrender alarms spread and settlers fled toward Hudson with livestock and families as rumors of invaders sparked a mass exodus. Later paroled prisoners turned fear to relief and a stockade was built in Columbia town with port holes and a garrison.
Christmas eve and day brought subzero weather that kept trouble away while five men faced arrest over the holiday. Joe Fisher pleaded guilty to liquor law violations after a raid at 565 Lodi Street and paid a $100 fine. Scotty McDonald and William Thompson, both intoxicated, were fined $5 and costs. Harry Talley was jailed for intoxication after leaving Christmas poultry in Court Street. Homer Clements, carrying a loaded Colt 32 automatic, was bound over on a concealed weapons charge with $200 bond.
In Lebanon Tennessee on December 26 bidders bought three horses for 87 cents total. The standout was a horse with a $1 bill pinned to its mane selling for 50 cents. A Cumberland University student had bought the same horse two days earlier for 25 cents, aiming to shed the liability.
A prolonged cold wave brought snow and temperatures from five to ten below zero. Christmas Day featured a sharp wind that strained coal supplies and homes. Government records show a five degree below reading, a Christmas benchmark not matched in fifty three years, with no relief expected for two to three days.
Robert H Styles died this morning at 434 West Tenth Street at age 25 years months 12 days. He is survived by his wife, father, four sisters, three brothers, and a grandmother. The Moose lodge member was taken to Sudra Funeral Home. funeral arrangements will be announced.
Forty three county jail inmates received a hearty Christmas meal featuring chicken mashed potatoes biscuits gravy celery and apple pie. They also got cigarettes as part of the spread and several baskets of food from families. The Women's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars visited G A R veterans delivering fruit baskets on Christmas day.
London December 26 The Prince of Wales already proficient in several instruments is learning to play the banjulele the Hawaiian instrument gaining rhythm and he bought two after being introduced by Brook Johns the American tenor banjoist. He also shows skill with dance band drums and hosts impromptu dance orchestras at St James Palace and York House with staff in attendance.
Andrew Kruzattit 39 of South Amherst a World War veteran and bootlegger was paroled from the county jail after tuberculosis like contagion concerns were raised. The release followed exams by TB experts upon Attorney Walter Watts request and comes as Kruzattit receives $754 monthly disability compensation.
Winter weather has left city skating ponds in prime condition. Jefferson school pond is large and smooth, McKinley grounds pond draws many skaters, and George Richwine's pond near the ice cream plant has extensive flooding and four electric lights for night skating. Hamilton school pond is not yet ready but will be soon.
Alexander Schilleman resumes responsibilities today after a seven day illness at his home located on 230 Gates avenue in Dulles City.
A blaze at the Washington Hotel in North Tonawanda early today killed three lodgers. Paul Koppe age 50 Charles Smith age 40 and John Rocke age 42 were confirmed dead. Property damage is estimated between 75 000 and 100 000 dollars.
In Norfolk on December 26 two masked bandits forced the Norva theatre cashier and manager to surrender all receipts. With revolvers pointed at them they slipped away with $2300 in a bag before escaping, in a bold late night robbery.
The navy department announced today that the annual midshipmen cruise will stay in home waters this year. The practice squadron led by the Battleship New York will depart Annapolis on May 30 and travel via the Panama Canal to the west coast, reaching Annapolis August 30 after visiting Seattle.
Four year old Mary Kearn of Dallastown Pennsylvania was vaccinated without anyone noticing until it took. While playing she scraped her knee and sister Viola six, recently vaccinated, wrapped the wound with a bandage from her own arm. Two days later Viola's hair swelled and the family doctor confirmed the vaccine on Viola's hand had successfully vaccinated Mary.
