Kyprianou’s Son Freed After Kidnapping Crisis in Cyprus

The 22 year old Achilleas Kyprianou, son of Cyprus president Spyros Kyprianou, was released early after a seven hour deadline expired. Police identified the five kidnappers led by Vassos Pavides of the EOKA B terrorist group demanding amnesty and safe conduct. The president refused to trade his son for prisoners as he led cabinet sessions and appealed for his country’s interests.

Coast Guard calls off search for missing scallop crew

In the North Atlantic near New Bedford Massachusetts the Coast Guard ended a weeklong search for 13 crew members of the 85 foot scallop boat Navigator missing since December 10. Relatives urge continuing effort while officials say no evidence of the vessel or crew remains. Navy Air Force and Canadian aircraft aided Coast Guard cutters during operations centered near Nantucket and Georges Bank.

Raids net $300 million PCP Quaalude drug labs

Federal agents and sheriff's deputies raided four illicit drug laboratories in Azusa Glendora and Covina arresting five people. The operations produced PCP and methaqualone with a street value around 300 million. Over 11 tons of precursor chemicals and 900 pounds of PCP were seized along with lab equipment and five vehicles.
