Blizzard of criticism hits Lorain administration and snow removal

Lorain City Council blasted the administration and private tow firms over the December snowstorm. Officials debated a $13,088 snow removal bill, salaries, fuel, rock salt, and equipment costs as residents complained about salting, towing charges, and unpassable sidewalks. The council moved to study towing fees and consider a contract system, while officials urged private residents to help with hydrant clearing and urged welfare assistance to aid cleanup.

Ideas marshaled to ameliorate paving

Lorain city council heard a report from an assessment board on a paving dispute. The Amelia Meadows developer did not pave Marshall Avenue to the West 40th Street line, while Forest Hills is under construction to the south and the street stops short of that property. The board said adjacent landowners cannot be assessed more than one third of the paving cost to the line, and the city cannot pay or assign the cost to Murello. Earl Frank urged that only the benefiting parcels would gain, so the city should not cover costs. Two options were proposed: have the developer bear full paving and sewer costs within his project or compel developers to pay.
