Monnet envisions flexible mediation in EU talks amid Paris meeting

Monnet and Brussels experts expect the commission to adopt a more elastic mediation role to keep talks from derailing after recent sessions. In Paris, French Foreign Minister Couve de Murville met West German Minister Gerhard Schroeder, who urged rapid Britain entry to the Common Market to protect unity and avoid wider EU friction. Schroeder also warned that delaying Britain could trigger internal disputes among the Six. The Monnet Action Committee, fresh from Paris, plans to press for a wider mandate to negotiate broader U S Europe partnership, aiming to align econ policies, monetary policy, agriculture, and even nuclear arms cooperation with Washington.
